Tell me about yourself:

My name is Molly, and I’m a tattooer from Portland, Oregon. I’m a person of faith, a Virgo, and one of those people who can’t resist making a pun when I see the opportunity.  I really like noodles, pugs, and antique stores.

How long have you been tattooing for?

I’ve been tattooing for about four years now. I did my first tattoo in July of 2016 and it has been a joy of a journey since then.

What made you want to become a tattoo artist?

Honestly, tattooing just seemed like it had all the elements I wanted in a job: one-on-one client interactions, creative problem solving, and art. I was drawn to the way tattoos tell stories and empower those who wear them. It just seemed like the whole package for me.

Why did you decide to customize the shoes the way you did?

I was really inspired by the contrast of the black and white stripes on these boots, and I knew I wanted to play with that. I did the landscapes and the florals as more delicate elements—elements that often come up in the tattoos I do. These shoes ended up being a combo of trying something new while also including bits of the things I draw often.

How was working on this project for you?

Fun!....and also a little bit nerve wracking. I felt pressure not to screw them up, but I also enjoyed the texture of the TUKskin as I painted on it. I think with a little more practice I could get used to painting on shoes!

Are you currently working on any other projects?

I just signed the lease on a new private studio space for my tattoo business, so my biggest project right now is actually just trying to get everything moved and decorated there.

How long have you been an artist for?

I don’t know at what point a person gets to start calling themself an “artist” (I’ve often wondered about that), but I have been drawing since I can remember. I always wanted to draw as a kid and I guess I just never stopped.

What’s your favorite tattoo that you have & why?

It’s so hard to pick a favorite! I love them all for different reasons. I have tattoos from different countries I’ve traveled to, and from several friends and colleagues in the industry. They all have their own memories. My most recent one, though, is just he word “No.” on my finger. I got it as a reminder that “no” can be a positive word, a full sentence, and a very important tool for creating boundaries. I look at it often and it makes me happy.

How were you keeping busy during quarantine?

I started embroidering again. I did some commissions. I pestered my husband (who has been working from home since late march). I got caught up with some long distance friends over video chat. To be honest, it could have been a lot worse. I’m very fortunate.
